Merseyrail has an extensive network of train services. There are 69 stations across the Merseyrail network, 34 of those stations serve the Wirral line. The network, which connects the city centre to surrounding towns, includes four underground stations and covers over 75 miles of track.
The train operator runs the Wirral Line with trains to Chester , Ellesmere Port, Birkenhead and West Kirby. It also runs the Northern Line, which has services to Hunts Cross, Headbolt Lane via Kirkby, Ormskirk and Southport.
Meanwhile, the City Line is operated by Northern Trains, connecting areas such as Edge Hill and Huyton to Manchester, Warrington, Wigan and Preston.
The famous yellow livery, so well across the City Region, first appeared on Mersey trains in October 1971.
It was then the name ‘Merseyrail’ was applied to trains running on the Wirral line, with the new branding being rolled-out onto the Northern line the following the year.
And it wasn’t just the look of the trains that changed, station entrance signage, timetables, posters and more were altered to carry the Merseyrail name.
On an average weekday, more than 100,000 passengers use the network so we’ve created a quiz to put your knowledge of our rail network to the test.
