Between airport lounges and late nights, some headlines cut straight through the noise. Kianna Underwood, 33, a former Nickelodeon child star, was killed in a hit-and-run in New York on Friday. NYPD say she was crossing an intersection in the Brownsville neighbourhood of Brooklyn in the morning when a black Ford Explorer SUV hit her. While she was lying in the street she was subsequently struck by a black and grey sedan. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Both drivers left and have not been identified. The investigation is ongoing.
If you grew up with Nickelodeon on in hotel suites and tour buses, you remember her. Underwood appeared in All That over seven episodes in 2005, and from 1999 to 2004 she voiced Fuschia Glover in Nick Jr’s Little Bill. She also spent a year on the first national tour of Hairspray as Little Inez, and there are photos of her at the Los Angeles opening night after party at the Henry Fonda Theatre alongside Jonathan Lipnicki. All That was her last credited role, a programme that helped launch names like Nick Cannon, Kenan Thompson and Amanda Bynes.
This is the sort of news that makes the city feel suddenly small. For all the glamour of opening nights and after parties, the streets can be unforgiving. Thinking of her family, friends and the people who grew up watching her. May she rest in peace.
